Job summary

Work with a team of engineers responsible for designing and developing the Ansible Network offering. Our Ansible Network Engineering team is looking for a Senior Manager in Durham, NC. In this role, you will be responsible for an offering that is part of the Ansible project which specializes in network device configuration and Day 2 Operations. You'll be responsible for a geographically distributed team of 7-10 engineers, immersing yourself in the day-to-day work of the team, responding to the needs of the team, and facilitating coaching and career development for the engineers on your team. As a Senior Manager, you'll need to have a record of leading a team of highly skilled developers, solid knowledge of agile development processes, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to guide technical discussions with architects and business teams. This is a great opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest developers in the open source community who are founders and committers to major open source projects.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Build a high-performing team of software engineers

  • Serve as a people manager for your team with responsibility for establishing objectives, providing feedback, fostering career development, and providing active coaching of associates

  • Work with product management and engineering teams to develop technology roadmaps and schedules and communicate these schedules

  • Serve as a coach for your team with responsibility for the planning, implementation, and delivery of tasks

  • Promote agile best practices among the teams and guide positive change within systems and processes by monitoring what works well and by identifying areas for improvement

  • Establish team key performance indicators, tracking measurements, analyze results, tune processes for continued improvement

  • Work with cross-functional managers and teams on documentation, product management, and quality engineering to coordinate tasks necessary for releasing enterprise quality software

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a technology-related discipline is preferred

  • Experience managing a distributed team of engineers

  • Practical experience with Kanban or other agile methods

  • Technical background in software development, the ability to understand technical requirements and communicate with authority on a technical level

  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and develop your skills in your team's technical area

  • Organized and methodical approach to work; good attention to detail

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to interact comfortably with other members of a large, geographically distributed team

  • Excellent presentation and writing skills; ability to convey your work and that of your team to a wide audience

  • Ability to serve as a facilitator for team-based discussions

  • Ability to work as part of a team that is comprised mainly of remote workers and widely geographically distributed; prior experience working remotely is a plus

  • Familiarity with Red Hat's solution portfolio and open source software development

  • Experience with Ansible by Red Hat or similar technologies is a big plus

  • A software engineering background and programming experience with languages like Python, Ruby, and Bash is preferred
